CLIFTON BEACHES

Giant granite boulders break up the four beaches at Clifton, all accessible by steps from Victoria Rd. As they're almost always sheltered from the wind, they offer top sunbathing spots. Vendors hawk drinks and ice creams along the beach and sun loungers and shades are available. However, there are no public toilets.

KIRSTENBOSCH BOTANICAL GARDENS

Location and unique flora combine to make these 52,800-sq-km botanical gardens among the most beautiful in the world. The main entrance at the Newlands end of the gardens is where you’ll find the information centre, an excellent souvenir shop and the conservatory

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE

Commonly called Cape Point, this 77.50-sq-km section of Table Mountain National Park includes awesome scenery, fantastic walks, great bird watching and often deserted beaches. Bookings are required for the two-day Cape of Good Hope Trail , a spectacular 33.8km circular route with one night spent at the basic Protea and Restio huts.

Some 250 species of birds have been spotted here, including cormorants and a family of ostriches that hang out near the Cape of Good Hope, the southwestern most point of the continent.

DISTRICT SIX MUSEUM

It's impossible not to be emotionally touched by this museum which celebrates the once lively multiracial area that was destroyed during apartheid in the 1960s and 1970s, its 60,000 inhabitants forcibly removed. Inside the former Methodist Mission Church home interiors have been recreated, alongside photographs, recordings and testimonials, all of which build an evocative picture of a shattered but not entirely broken community.

Displays include a floor map of District Six on which former residents have labelled where their demolished homes and features of their neighbourhood.
